A Doctor's Appointment and Bed Rest

On Wednesday I went in for my 31 week appointment.  It also doubled as my follow up appointment from Labor and Delivery.

The beginning went as it normally does.
Blood Pressure- 92/60
Weight is still good
Baby's heartbeat in the 140s

The doctor said we are measuring on track and the baby's head is pretty far down and her butt is sticking out to the left (she called her J-Lo)!

But then she checked my cervix and I am not dilated, but I am 50% effaced.  I was actually having BH contractions that morning (about 8 that hour).  So she put me on bed rest until my appointment the following week (Wednesday).

She also put me on Nifedipine, it is the generic version of the pill that helps to stop contractions.

I am still working 1/2 days, but I am doing it from the bed or recliner with my feet up.

So as much as I love a plan, there isn't one right now.  I guess we go back on Wednesday and see what the doctor has to say.  I could go on bed rest for good, or things might have stopped progressing and I just need to take it easy?  Who knows.

I did get a little worried when she said if things have progressed next week, then we would have to do the steroid shot so that Avery's lungs can develop faster if she comes as early as it looks like she might.

I just don't know what to think.  My doctor's don't say too much but I don't know if that is because it isn't that big of a deal or if it is because they don't want to freak me out???

All I know is, we want to meet Avery, just not yet.  I am hoping for 38 weeks, but I will be happy if we can make it to 36 even.

So I am just hanging out on the couch filling my down time with Harry Potter movies and the book The Help.

31 Weeks

How Far Along? 31 weeks!

Maternity Clothes? That is all I can wear at this point!

Weight Gain? I gained another 1 pound last week.  So we are at a total of 16.

Stretch Marks? Nothing new!

Sleep? Actually sleep is painful now.  Sleeping on my side is causing me to have sore hips and a sore lower back.  I feel like an old man when I get out of bed in the morning!  Even  my two body pillows don't help.

Best Moment of the Week?  Getting the glider set up.  We are all set in the nursery, minus the decorations and a few things we have registered for.

Weirdest Comment:  Nothing really.

Movement? I am doing the kick count thing (count how long t takes to get to 10 movements), they say it should happen in an hour or less.  So far Avery has clocked in at 1, 3, 5, 7, and 6 minutes.  She is a mover!
Gender? Girl, Avery!

What I miss? Sleeping on my back and waking up feeling like a 28 year old!

Symptoms: The big ones are the sleep stuff.  Skin is still not great.  There is still swelling in my feet and hands.

What I'm looking forward to? I am pretty sure that vacation is a no go, so that makes me sad, but I am looking forward to at least doing a short weekend with my hubby if we can't make it to the beach.

Weekly Wisdom:  Naps!!!!!!!!!!

Milestones: Nothing big milestone wise this week.

Emotions: Getting excited.  And relieved that the BH contractions have really slowed down.

A Trip to Labor and Delivery

Thursday started out as any other day.  I got up and as I was getting ready for work I was having a few BH contractions.  I had Ray feel my stomach just to feel how tight my stomach gets.

And then I started to notice that I was getting them pretty often.  Ray made me count out how often they were coming.  During our trip to work, I realized I was getting them consistently, every 6-8 minutes.  Ray made me call the doctor.  When I called I was expecting them to say, lay down or something (because they are SOOOOO laid back everything), but they told me to come in for an appointment at 11 (about 1.5 hours later).

A girl at work told me I just needed to go right then and get there early, so Jean and I went to the Doctor right then and there.  They were starting to come more often, mind you these were truly BH, there was no pain, just lots of tightening in my stomach and taking my breathe away, but again no pain.

We got to the doctor and they got me in right away.  My blood pressure was 90/60 and everything else was normal.  Then they hooked me up to the contraction monitor.  It was nice because we heard her heartbeat the whole time, which was soo reassuring!!!  It was also nice that I could see when the contractions were happening.  I was nervous I would get there and they would be like, Kalyn, you are just being a baby, these aren't contractions or something like that.

So I laid there while they monitored the baby and the contractions.  We got to a point where they a minute and half apart and lasting 30 seconds.  And thought they were just BH it still made me nervous, as I am only 30w2d.

So the doctor came in and checked my cervix.  I guess there are two parts to your cervix and the first was open, but that isn't a huge deal and the second part was closed and very firm.  So that is the great news!!!

They gave me Nifedipine.  This is just a pill that is meant to stop the contractions.  So I took that at about noon and it gave me a headache, and since I all ready had low blood pressure, it did not help with my circulation and my face and feet got really red.

At that point the doctor released me and told me to call if I had more than 5 contractions in an hour.

So we left and went to Panera for lunch and then I headed home.  I was still having contractions, but I didn't count them, because I wanted to lay down first and see how it went from there.

About an hour later they were still happening so I started counting when they would happen and after two hours I had gotten them consistently every 4 minutes.  So I called Ray and he said he was coming from work.  I called the doctor and she said to go straight to Labor and Delivery.

I waited for Ray to come home and in that time I guess my adrenaline kicked in and I packed a make shift hospital bag, just in case this wasn't going to end the way I had hoped (as in leave the hospital still pregnant, rather than with a preemie baby in the NICU).

Ray got home and we got straight to the hospital.  They hooked me up to the monitor again.  So we got to hear baby girl's heartbeat, but it didn't show me the contractions, that was reported at the nurses station.

So they gave me the shot Terbutaline.  This is supposed to be even better than the pill, so we waited to see what that did.

Well, it still didn't stop the contractions, so they gave me another shot 30 minutes later (they can't give it to you more than once every 30 minutes).  So then we monitored it for another half hour and they had slowed, but not completely stopped.  So they gave me another pill.  About an hour later they released me.

Overall, it was an exhausting experience, I managed to not break down, even though I was scared, so I was very proud of myself.  I was physically exhausted.  Even though these contractions were just BH, I still had them all day for at least every 10 minutes.  And I had the worst headache from all of the medication.  But at the end of the day the most important thing is that Avery is still in there growing and hopefully she will stay in there for awhile.

So the last two days I have been home on bed rest and Ray is doing great and keeping up with everything I need.  I am still getting the contractions, but not as consistently and not enough to make another trip to the hospital.  Let's hope that continues!

As a fun side note . . . she is all ready making us laugh, she is feisty and maybe has a little bit of an attitude.  While she was being monitored, she would get tired of the pod thing over where she was and she would literally hit the pod until it moved.  She even did it when the nurse was trying to find her, she was knocking the pod from where the nurse was holding it!!!  That was fun to experience!!  I can't wait to meet her, but I am happy to wait 9+ more weeks.

30 Weeks

How Far Along? 30 weeks!

Maternity Clothes? Absolutely, and I am so grateful that it is summer and I can wear flip flops to work, I am not sure if my regular shoes will fit my new Fred Flintstone feet.

Weight Gain? I gained another 1.5 pounds last week.  So we are at a total of 15.  I am feeling good about this and I am right on track for hitting my doctor's goal of 25.

Stretch Marks? Nothing new!  But I still check for them and I freak out when I see/feel something resembling a stretch mark, then it fades away and I realize that it was just lines from my clothes!

Sleep? Doing pretty good, I sleep really well for naps!!!!

Best Moment of the Week?  Getting some more things ordered for the nursery.  Just trying to get it wrapped up by 34 weeks (when I go on vacation).

Weirdest Comment:  You look like you are going to pop!  I got this from the cashier at Wal Mart.  Then she asked when I was due.  I think she was a little embarrassed by the fact that it is over two months from now.  I definitely let her feel embarrassed.  Though honestly, when people say that it doesn't bother me anymore, I am glad I am growing and I would rather be too big than too small.

Movement? She is starting to really put some force behind her punches and kicks.  Occasionally she will get me in some organ (not sure which) but I can tell she hit something important, because it takes my breathe away.

Gender? Girl, Avery!

What I miss? I do miss being able to get around the way I used to.  Getting in and out of our small sized SUV is starting to be difficult.

Symptoms: My skin is bad this week.  My back and knees are starting to ache.  And my feet are swelling, so are my fingers, I am now wearing the pearl ring Ray gave me as a wedding gift on my ring finger, as it is the only ring that fits without making me nervous about having to cut it off.  Also, my belly button is completely flat, the scar from my belly button ring (which I took out years ago) is starting to get really red and stretched.  It is so weird, because I used to have a major innie, I am wondering when it will pop out.  Lastly, I have been getting a lot of BH contractions, I am sure it's fine, but every once in awhile it makes me nervous.

What I'm looking forward to? My vacation in August, I hope the doctor will still clear me for it, it's in Florida (a 12 hour drive) in week 33/34.  She said ok for now, but that I have to check at each visit.

Weekly Wisdom:  Naps!!!!!!!!!!

Milestones: 30 weeks!  I feel like the next big one is 32 weeks, 8 months, wow!

Emotions: Getting excited.  And I can't believe she'll be here in 10 weeks or less!!!

Stop Wishing Time Away

I am such a forward thinking person in terms of time and planning.  I am always thinking about what next big thing is coming up.  After I got engaged I focused on the wedding, after the wedding I focused on buying the house, after the house I focused on (and then obsessed) about getting pregnant.

Now that I am pregnant, I just can't wait to have the baby.  But I realized something this morning, I just need to sit back and enjoy things the way they are for the moment.

I need to not look at this like 10 or so weeks before I meet my little girl, I need to look at it as 10 or so weeks to truly enjoy my life the way it is now.  Specifically enjoy spending time with my husband.

So I have decided I am going to make a list of things that will be difficult or that will happen less often once Avery is here and make sure we do those things more in the next few weeks!!!

Here is what I have so far
-go to the movies
-sleep in
-go to friends' houses (I don't think "going out" to bars and such is really appropriate at this point)
-do things right after work

Again, I know a baby won't stop these things entirely (well maybe except for the sleeping in), but they will just involve more planning or not be as frequent as they are now!

What are some things you would add to this list?

I am going to try to enjoy my next ten weeks rather than wish them away, but I still can't wait to meet my baby!

29 Weeks

How Far Along? 29 weeks!

Maternity Clothes? Yep!  I am loving wearing bathing suit cover ups (they look nice) and leggings, so comfortable in this 90 degree heat!

Weight Gain? I knew I must have gained a decent amount of weight this week, I was soooo hungry all the time and I can tell she has gotten bigger, as her movements seems more restrained.  I am up two pounds this week . . . so grand total of 13.5 gained so far.  My overall goal is 25 and my goal for a awhile now has been to be right at 15 pounds by week 30, so right on track!  Also, my doctor is happy with this weight gain, for anyone out there who is worried it is low.

Stretch Marks? Nothing new!

Sleep? Doing pretty good, I sleep really well for naps!!!!

Best Moment of the Week?  Hmmm there are a few great ones . . .
Ray got the dresser done, I washed all of the clothes and organized and put them away.
We rearranged the nursery furniture a million times and have finally settled on something.
Finding out I passed my gestational diabetes test!!!!!

Weirdest Comment:  You look like you are going to pop!  I know my belly is getting big, but ready to pop>  We still have 11 weeks!

Movement? I love having an active baby, every time I get worried, I just wait a minute and she will go crazy in there.  Honestly I don't even do the movement tracking thing, there's no point, she will move eight times in 3 minutes every other hour.  Though her movement is starting to become slightly uncomfortable at times.  She is getting bigger and stronger and the space is getting more cramped, therefore more discomfort for me.  Ray is amazed every night at how much more force is behind each kick and punch.

Gender? Girl, Avery!

What I miss? Nothing, doing good this week.  In fact, I am really loving my growing belly.   Though if I had to pick something, it would be that I miss not being hot, though I am sure a lot of it is due more to this nasty heat wave than the pregnancy.

Symptoms: My skin is bad this week.  My back and knees are starting to ache.  And my feet are swelling.  Also, my belly button is completely flat.  It is so weird, because I used to have a major innie, I am wondering when it will pop out.  Oh and getting a decent amount of Braxton Hicks contractions, they are the weirdest feeling!!

What I'm looking forward to? My vacation in August, I hope the doctor will still clear me for it, it's in Florida (a 12 hour drive) in week 33/34.  She said ok for now, but that I have to check at each visit.
Weekly Wisdom:  Naps!!!!!!!!!!

Milestones: Almost 30 weeks!  I have a feeling I will go a little early (maybe a week or two) so if I am right we have less than 10 weeks until we meet baby girl, holy shit that came up fast.

Emotions: Getting excited.  And I can't believe she'll be here in 11 weeks or less!!!

It's so funny how it looks smaller in pictures than in real life!

Great Weekend

We had a wonderful weekend!

Friday I was so tired from the week that I went to bed at 9 (on about a half an hour before I normally go to bed lately).  But Saturday I watched the first Harry Potter movie and did some cleaning, took a nap and then went out on a date with my hubby!

We went to this wonderful Japanese restaurant and then to go see Horrible Bosses, which was really funny!  It was nice to get dressed up and go do something non baby related with him!

On Sunday we got sooo much done, I am finally feeling ok about the nursery.  I washed all of her clothes (they are a lot of them)!!!  And Ray put together the dresser.  We rearranged the room about 16 times.

It's tough, because the guest rooms in our house are soooo small.  Her room is literally 10 feet by 12 feet.  Now she has a great double door closet with a good amount of space, but the room is just hard to put that many pieces of furniture in without looking cramped, but I think we figured out the best way!

Once the wall decor is up, I will post pictures.

On a side note, I have been having Braxton Hicks contractions a lot lately, is that normal?  I have had them off and on, but now I am having a decent amount of them throughout the day?

28 Week Dr Appt

Here are the highlights  . . .

BP 104/58
Heart rate for Avery 140
Measuring right on track

The glucose drink was not good.  I got the fruit punch one, I think I would have preferred the orange, but oh well!

I couldn't stop burping, the drink was so syrupy it did make my stomach hurt and it made baby girl go crazy!

The doctor answered all of my questions and said everything looked great!

Then I went and got my blood drawn.

Overall an easy appointment, the only thing that kinda ticks me off, is that they said I will get my results on 7.11.  Doesn't that seem like a long time?  Most people get them right away.  Yuck, I hate waiting for something like this.

I will keep you all posted!

28 Weeks

How Far Along? 28 weeks!

Maternity Clothes? Yep!  The only thing I still need to get is a bathing suit.

Weight Gain? I didn't gain anything this week.  So we are still at 11.5 pounds total.  I am feeling pretty good about this.  I am going to ask my doctor at my appointment tomorrow if I am still on track for a healthy baby.  If I need to gain more weight, than that is what I will do!

Stretch Marks? Nothing new, but I had three before I got pregnant, and I think they are growing, but I can't tell for sure.

Sleep? Overall, it has actually gotten better!  I have found the sweet spot and am not drinking anything after 8, so being more comfortable and not getting up so often have really made things so much better!

Best Moment of the Week?  Hmmm there are a few great ones . . .
Ray got the crib put together!!!!  We have the crib skirt on and the fitted sheet on the mattress.  Now he needs to put the dresser together.  We are waiting on buying the glider and then all I need is to get the tree wall decal up and a few minor things and we should be set!

Weirdest Comment:  When we were camping, my little brother and his friend (both 16) kept saying "Are you sure you are ready to have kids?"  So I said, no, I am terrified, but excited, and let's be honest, it's a little late to change my mind.

Movement? I am going to ask the doctor if she can tell how the baby is lying, I am starting to feel spots that are hard and big, so it's either her head or her butt.  We'll see!

Gender? Girl, Avery!

What I miss? Nothing, doing good this week.  In fact, I am really loving my growing belly.

Symptoms: My skin is bad again this week.  My back and knees are starting to ache.  And my feet are swelling.

What I'm looking forward to? Passing this glucose test (tomorrow) hopefully!  I am kinda nervous about this one.

Weekly Wisdom:  Naps!!!!!!!!!!

Milestones: I went camping in my third trimester.  I am feeling pretty proud of that!!!

Emotions: Getting excited.  And I can't believe she'll be here in 12 weeks or less!!!

Camping

Camping was great!

We got up there on Saturday at noon or so (after a bathroom break for only a 2.5 hour trip, my how things have changed).  It was hot, but manageable.  We just set up camp and hung out.  Ray enjoyed some beets and I loaded up on water.

We had a great dinner and spent time with the family.  That night was relatively cool and I actually did not have many issues sleeping, thank god for the air mattress and three pillows I brought!

I also have to say that the pee jug I brought was a lifesaver!  I know it's kinda gross, but hey, it worked.

The next day we went to the pool, which was as wonderful as all of the other pregnant women out there have claimed it to be.  My knees stopped hurting and I felt so refreshed!!!  We went twice that that, it was a short walk from the campsite!

I will say, it felt weird to be so pregnant and in a bathing suit in front of people.  I was a little self conscious, but once I got in the water, I didn't care!

It was pretty hot and humid on Sunday, so I did have to take off the wedding ring (I still had the band on, since it is a bit bigger).  Other than that, I had no side effects.

We packed up Monday morning and headed home.  I will say that by the time we got home my whole body ached from probably overdoing it, but I took a nap and went to bed early, so I feel fine today!

I will say that I do not plan to go camping for the rest of this pregnancy, maybe others can go later in theirs, but I just don't think I can handle it.

Also, big thanks to Ray, who took a lot more on during this trip than normal, so that really helped too!

Happy 4th and Camping

One of my favorite things to do in the spring/summer/fall is to go camping.

I have camped all my life and done it in just about every way (that kinda sounds dirty?)
-Backpacking
-Camping in a tent
-Camping in an RV

My favorite is the tent.  It is the nice in between.

I love sitting around a campfire, I love not having to worry about emails, phone calls, etc.  I love just hanging out and spending quality time (especially with my dog, who LOVES camping).  And I must say, if I am going camping with my Dad the food is also amazing.

This weekend he plans on the following for dinners
White Chili and Cornbread
Stuffed Pork Chops with an Orange Glaze and a Triple Chocolate Cake
Brats and Hamburgers with veggies and an Apple Peach Pie

He enjoys nothing more than camping and cooking in his dutch oven.

Here is where my slight concern comes in
I am 7 months pregnant, I have not yet camped while pregnant, so this could be a disaster?

What I am worried about
-Sleeping well on an air mattress
-Getting up to pee a million times and have to walk to the restrooms, which are not exactly close
-Getting overly hot

Otherwise, no real major concerns, but we shall see!!!!  I just couldn't go all year without camping, I don't know that I have ever done that, I have camped every year since I was 9 months old.
